U.S. Forces Seize Oil Tanker in Sanctions Evasion Crackdown
As part of Operation Southern Spear, U.S. military forces have detained the oil tanker Sagitta in the Caribbean for violating quarantine restrictions. The vessel is linked to sanctions evasion and has been actively used to transport Russian oil, drawing the attention of law enforcement in the region. This seizure is part of a broader, ongoing effort to disrupt the flow of Russian oil in violation of international sanctions imposed after the invasion of Ukraine.
The Sagitta is under sanctions from Ukraine, the United Kingdom, the United States, the EU, and other nations, highlighting the continued international measures against entities that violate established restrictions. A surge in sanctions evasion attempts is indicated by data showing 25 tankers were reflagged under the Russian flag in the last three months of 2025, with 18 of those switches occurring in December alone.
U.S. Resolve in Countering Illegal Oil Trade
The U.S. Coast Guard has previously detained tankers Bella I and Sophia in the region as part of the fight against illegal activity. These actions underscore the U.S. commitment to countering the illicit trade of Russian oil and enforcing international norms. As a spokesperson for U.S. Southern Command stated:
'Through Operation Southern Spear, the U.S. Department of Defense remains steadfast in its commitment to dismantle illicit activity in the Western Hemisphere in partnership with the Coast Guard, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Justice.'
The detention of the Sagitta, along with the prior arrests of the Bella I and Sophia, forms part of wider international efforts to combat sanctions evasion and the illegal circulation of Russian oil.
These U.S. operations demonstrate a consistent enforcement of sanctions policy aimed at restricting Russia's oil supply capabilities. Amid global economic strain and political conflicts, such missions highlight the critical importance of international cooperation in upholding sanctions and maintaining stability in the global energy market.
