Witkoff's Meeting with Putin

U.S. President's Special Envoy Steve Witkoff is scheduled to meet with Vladimir Putin on January 22nd. Witkoff stated that his visit to Moscow will include Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of former U.S. President Donald Trump. The meeting will focus on finalizing a 20-point plan to end the war in Ukraine, which is currently 90% complete. This diplomatic push comes as the U.S. seeks to establish a framework for negotiations, though significant hurdles remain.

This news emerges against a backdrop of escalating military action in Ukraine. On January 20th, Russian forces launched another major attack, employing:

  • 1 'Zircon' anti-ship missile
  • 18 'Iskander-M'/'S-300' ballistic missiles
  • 15 Kh-101 cruise missiles
  • 339 attack drones

Strikes from 5 missiles and 24 attack drones were confirmed at 11 different locations.

Steve Witkoff commented on the importance of the upcoming meeting, noting:

“Well, look, we are supposed to meet with him on Thursday.”
He also added that
“everyone wants to make a peace deal.”
In the context of this situation, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has emphasized that 'the response to Russian attacks must be different.' The Ukrainian President remains in the country due to the ongoing energy crisis.

Potential Outcomes of the Meeting

Efforts to conclude the conflict in Ukraine are ongoing, and the results of Witkoff's meeting with Putin are expected to significantly influence future developments. The meeting occurs at a critical juncture, as hostilities intensify and the pursuit of peace talks becomes increasingly urgent. Given the context of recent Russian attacks, the outcomes could either open new avenues for resolving the conflict or further complicate the situation. The positions and willingness to compromise of both sides remain pivotal factors on the path to peace.
