The United States is stepping away from its role as the world’s dominant power and moving toward a post-imperial strategy built on pragmatic isolationism and the deliberate weakening of rivals. Romanenko added that every empire eventually reaches its expansion limits. He underscored a unique American advantage: the U.S. sits on what is effectively a global island, is largely self-sufficient in resources, and remains a technological innovator. Notably, Romanenko predicted two decades ago that the U.S. would foster chaos in Europe—a forecast that now aligns with the changing direction of American foreign policy.
“We are building a civilization unto itself. We are no longer trying to export our idea, the American way of life, or any ideology,” says Vsevolod Zelenin.
Zelenin argues that Trump’s core mission is to create conditions that weaken everyone outside America. In this new foreign policy paradigm, the U.S. is abandoning the promotion of democracy in favor of hard-nosed pragmatism and a focus on undermining competitors.
