China Accused of Covert Nuclear Testing at Lop Nur Site by United States

США заявляють про можливі приховані ядерні випробування Китаю на полігоні Лоп Нур.

U.S. Levels Accusations Against China

The United States has alleged that China may be conducting clandestine nuclear tests designed to evade international monitoring systems. According to the U.S. State Department, China carried out a series of low-yield explosions at the Lop Nur test site, which American assessments equate to the power of hundreds of tons of TNT. U.S. intelligence identified one such incident on June 22, 2020, when seismic stations recorded underground tremors with a magnitude of 2.75. The Lop Nur site has been China's primary nuclear testing ground for decades.

'Decoupling' Method and Nuclear Arsenal Expansion

U.S. Under Secretary of State Thomas DiNanno stated that China is employing a technique known as 'decoupling.' This method involves conducting explosions within specially engineered underground cavities to dampen the seismic signal, thereby complicating the identification of tests. It is important to note that the monitoring system of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) is not always capable of detecting explosions with a yield below 500 tons.

Furthermore, China is actively expanding its nuclear arsenal, including constructing new silos for intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). According to U.S. analysts, China now possesses more launchers than the United States. China has refused to participate in arms control negotiations and does not permit international observers at its nuclear test sites. This stance has raised global concerns about a potential escalation of nuclear tensions in the region. These developments occur against a backdrop of strategic competition between the world's two largest economies.

China's growing nuclear program and its refusal to engage in international arms control cooperation are contributing to heightened global tensions. The U.S. response may prompt other nations to reassess their security strategies and reactions to potential threats. Observing the subsequent evolution of events is crucial, as they could have serious implications for international security and regional stability.
