Strike on Russian Missile Systems in Crimea
On the night of April 28, drones from the Middle-strike units of Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces hit a storage site for Russian operational-tactical missile systems in Crimea. The operation took place on the grounds of a former missile base near the village of Ovrazhky, located about 40 kilometers east of Simferopol. Impacts and detonations were recorded during the attack.
The enemy equipment at this base posed a direct threat to Ukraine, as its missiles could reach the front line or rear cities in just a few minutes. Resistance movement activists had repeatedly documented missile launches originating from this very location.
Range and Threat to Ukraine
According to available information, the Iskander system has a stated range of up to 500 kilometers. It can fire both ballistic and cruise missiles. The Iskander-M ballistic missile follows an extremely high trajectory and can reach hypersonic speeds on certain segments of its flight.
- Flight time for a missile launched from Crimea to cities like Mykolaiv or Kryvyi Rih is measured in mere minutes.
- The cost of a single Iskander self-propelled launcher is at least $10 million.
Following the strike on the night of April 28, explosions were heard in the Kirovskyi, Leninskyi, Sovietskyi, and Dzhankoi districts, as well as in the cities of Sevastopol and Feodosia. It is likely that strikes also targeted the military airfields at Saky, Kacha, and Belbek.
Representatives of the Special Operations Forces stated: 'The hidden equipment was located on the territory of a former missile base near the village of Ovrazhky, 40 kilometers east of occupied Simferopol. From there, missiles could reach the front line or rear cities of Ukraine in just a few minutes.'
This operation is part of Ukraine’s broader effort to eliminate enemy threats and continue the fight for its territorial integrity. The strike on the Crimean base highlights the Special Operations Forces’ strategic approach to neutralizing military threats that could impact the security of Ukrainian regions. Such actions also signal Ukraine’s readiness to conduct active operations in occupied territories as the conflict continues. Thus, the focus on destroying key military assets is a component of a wider defense and counter-aggression strategy.
In addition to the recent strike on missile systems, Ukrainian forces have successfully targeted other critical assets in Crimea. Notably, Ukrainian drones have destroyed a key drone base and aircraft, further crippling the enemy's operational capabilities. These coordinated efforts underscore the ongoing threat posed by Russian military installations in the region and highlight Ukraine's strategic response to mitigate this risk.
