Starlink User Forecast for Ukraine
The number of Starlink users in Ukraine is projected to potentially surge from 5 million to 12 million by the end of 2024. This figure would represent approximately half the subscriber base of the country's major operator, Kyivstar, where CEO Oleksandr Komarov is actively engaged. Kaan Terzioğlu, CEO of the telecom holding company Veon, noted that frequent power outages mean nearly every Ukrainian is likely to need this service at some point. The ongoing conflict has made reliable connectivity a critical necessity for both civilians and infrastructure.
Veon's Expansion and New Technology Initiatives
Veon plans to integrate Starlink services into the network of its Beeline operator in Kazakhstan, with a full-scale launch expected by the end of March. A rollout in markets like Pakistan, Bangladesh, or Uzbekistan is also possible within the year. Over the next 3-5 years, the group is considering expansion into South Asia, Latin America, and Africa. In Ukraine, however, the operator does not plan to connect with other satellite providers until at least the end of next year.
Veon is also in talks with Amazon (Project Kuiper), AST SpaceMobile, and Eutelsat OneWeb. Furthermore, the launch of a first major language model (LLM) based on the Google Gemma framework is anticipated in the next quarter. These steps underscore the company's aggressive push to adopt new technologies and services for users in Ukraine and beyond.
The growth in Starlink users in Ukraine highlights an increasing demand for stable internet connections, especially amid frequent electricity blackouts. This trend could impact the competitiveness of local operators like Kyivstar, which must adapt their strategies to retain customers in a shifting market.
