Honoring the Memory of Volodymyr Datsenko
Every morning at 9 AM, Ukrainians pay tribute to those who have lost their lives in the Russian-Ukrainian war. Today, we remember Senior Lieutenant Volodymyr Datsenko, who died from injuries sustained during a missile attack on the International Peacekeeping and Security Center in the Lviv region. He passed away in a hospital on March 14, 2022, after being wounded the day before.
Volodymyr Datsenko, known by the call sign Datsenio, was originally from Vinnytsia. He studied at the Hetman Petro Sahaidachny National Army Academy in Lviv. He served in the 72nd Separate Mechanized Brigade named after the Black Zaporozhians of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In January 2022, he was transferred to the Yavoriv training ground, where he continued his duties.
Circumstances of His Death
The circumstances of Volodymyr's injury were tragic: Russian occupiers launched a missile strike on the International Peacekeeping and Security Center. Volodymyr shielded his comrade with his own body, suffering severe burns in the process. His sister, Maria, recalls that Volodymyr always dreamed of becoming a military serviceman and was an exceptionally bright and kind person. During his years at the academy, he made many friends with whom he stayed in touch throughout his life.
Volodymyr always took care of his subordinates, and his words, 'all my guys are alive,' testify to his dedication and courage. On the eve of his death, at 3:47 AM on March 13, 2022, he sent his mother a final message about a massive air raid alert. Unfortunately, around 5 AM that same day, the Yavoriv training ground was hit by a missile strike, resulting in Volodymyr sustaining fatal injuries.
On March 14, around 1 AM, the young man's heart stopped beating. Volodymyr was buried in the village of Bruslyniv in the Vinnytsia region, where his memory will always be honored by his surviving family: his parents, sister, and daughter. His death was a great loss to everyone who knew him, causing deep pain in the hearts of his loved ones and friends.
The memory of Volodymyr Datsenko is part of the broader tragedy that has engulfed Ukraine due to Russian aggression. His heroism and dedication to service highlight the human cost of this war. Daily commemorations for the fallen, such as Volodymyr, remind Ukrainians of the price their country pays for its independence and territorial integrity. These moments of remembrance also serve as a crucial element of national identity during wartime, uniting society in shared grief and a yearning for peace.
As we reflect on the sacrifice of Senior Lieutenant Volodymyr Datsenko, it is important to remember that he is not the only hero lost in this ongoing conflict. Another soldier from Lviv, Ruslan Dutko, also made the ultimate sacrifice on the frontline, underscoring the bravery and commitment of those fighting for their country.
