Status of combatants in Ukraine

Being a combatant in Ukraine is not only a sense of pride but also an opportunity to receive social guarantees and benefits from the state. However, it is important to remember that this status can be revoked under certain circumstances.

Revocation of combatant status

  • If a serviceman commits a deliberate serious or especially serious crime during service or while performing a combat mission;

  • If it becomes known that a person has provided false information about their participation in hostilities or personal data;

  • If a veteran decides to voluntarily renounce their combatant status.

Procedure for granting and revoking combatant status

The regulations for granting and revoking the status of combatants are defined by the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 203 dated March 3, 2020. Relevant decisions are made by special departmental commissions at agencies such as the Ministry of Defense, the National Guard, the Security Service, and the State Border Guard Service.

In case of disputes, the final decision is made by the Interagency Commission on Veterans Affairs.

Social guarantees for combatants

Combatants are supported by the state in terms of medical care, payment of utility bills, transportation, and employment. In addition, they are entitled to increased pensions, social payments, and educational assistance for children up to the age of 23.

It is important to know that combatants have certain benefits and social guarantees that help them after returning to civilian life.
