Reassessing heat risks for people over 60
As extreme heat becomes more common, scientists are taking a closer look at which groups are most exposed. A new report from Stanford University, published in The Lancet Planetary Health, concludes that the health toll from high temperatures on people aged 60 and older has been systematically understated. Under 1.5°C of warming, the study predicts that at least 22% of seniors worldwide will have to endure dangerous heat for a month or more each year; for every further degree of warming, another billion older people will face an added month of severe thermal stress.
The researchers also highlight regional hotspots. If temperatures rise by 3°C, elderly residents of South Asia and the Persian Gulf could experience hazardous heat conditions both day and night for up to three consecutive months. The threat is most acute in poorer nations with little access to air conditioning or other cooling, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Niger. The authors warn that such conditions could trigger large-scale climate migration and create fresh humanitarian emergencies.
Why are older bodies more at risk? The study enrolled senior participants directly, producing far more accurate data than earlier efforts. Previous estimates relied on measurements taken with a psychrometric thermometer from young, healthy adults. Aging individuals tend to sweat less and are more likely to have cardiovascular or other preexisting conditions, which leaves them especially defenseless against high temperatures.
Looking ahead, the research models the impact of extreme heat on human health through 2100. The team urges immediate cuts in greenhouse gas emissions alongside expanded access to cooling systems for vulnerable populations. According to the authors, these steps could dramatically change the outlook and head off the worst outcomes for seniors in the near future.
