Hot weather forces drivers to choose light footwear - flip-flops, sandals, and sometimes even drive barefoot. The question of the safety of this decision concerns many motorists, especially considering the possible fines from the police.

Ukrainian legislation does not contain direct prohibitions regarding specific types of footwear while driving. Police do not have the right to fine a driver solely for wearing flip-flops. However, the situation changes dramatically when open footwear affects road safety.

Risks of light footwear while driving

Auto lawyer Mykhailo from Ternopil explains: 'Article 125 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses provides for a fine for actions that threaten traffic safety. Footwear only becomes an issue when it interferes with driving.' According to him, there have been cases in Ukraine where drivers received penalties after road accidents, where investigators pointed to improper footwear as one of the factors of the crash.

Traffic safety specialists emphasize real risks. Light footwear can catch on the pedal or slip off at a critical moment, which poses a threat to safety. Driving instructor Kyrylo from Kyiv confirms these concerns in practice: 'In practice, we see that even experienced drivers get confused when a sandal gets stuck under the pedal. It’s better to have a pair of sneakers in the car.'

Drivers choose light footwear during hot weather, but this can become a cause of danger on the road. There are no fines for flip-flops while driving in Ukraine, but they can be a factor in accidents due to the loss of vehicle control. Experts advise drivers to keep comfortable footwear in the car for a safe trip.
