Currently, many Ukrainians are traveling abroad. Therefore, important questions arise: is insurance required for crossing the border (health insurance for crossing the border), what insurance is needed for crossing the border to different countries, and what is the price of insurance for crossing the border, as it depends on many conditions.
When discussing the issue of whether health insurance is needed for crossing the border and where to obtain insurance for crossing the border, it is essential to understand the importance of such a document. It is an insurance policy for tourists and migrants. Therefore, whether insurance is currently needed for crossing the border depends not only on the purpose but also on the duration of the trip.
Insurance for Border Crossing: Why is it Needed and When to Apply
Health insurance for crossing the border is an insurance policy that helps cover the costs of emergency medical assistance during stay abroad. Even minor health issues abroad can incur significant financial expenses: consultations with doctors, diagnostic procedures, purchasing prescribed medications, or hospitalization are paid according to the laws of the particular state. For foreigners, such services are often more expensive than for local residents, and without proper insurance protection, all expenses may fall on the traveler himself.
At the same time, the concept of insurance for crossing the border does not mean that the same policy is mandatory for each person and any trip. Requirements depend on the destination country, the traveler's citizenship, the reasons for entry, the type of visa, the duration of stay, and the purpose of the trip. For applying for a Schengen visa, for instance, medical insurance with a minimum coverage of 30,000 euros, valid in all countries subject to the respective visa requirement, and throughout the planned stay, is required. The policy must cover certain emergency expenses, including medical repatriation.
If a citizen of Ukraine is heading to a country where a visa is not required, this does not automatically mean the absence of any insurance requirements. Rules for visa-free entry, insurance requirements for foreigners applying for residence permits, and conditions of particular stay programs may vary. Therefore, before traveling, it is essential to check the rules of the specific country to which he plans to travel, as well as the transit countries, if a separate entry is anticipated through them.
A medical policy serves two main functions. The first is financial: if an insured event occurs covered by the contract, the insurance company or its assistance organizes help and pays for the corresponding services within the terms of the contract. The second is organizational: the insured receives contacts for a support service, which can advise them on which medical institution to approach, how to arrange treatment, and what documents to keep for further settlement of the case.
It is important to differentiate between travel medical insurance and vehicle insurance. If a person is crossing the border in their own car, they may need two separate types of insurance coverage: medical insurance for passengers and the driver and automobile civil liability insurance, specifically a 'Green Card' for countries where it is required. The automobile policy does not cover regular medical treatment for the traveler, and health insurance does not replace the car owner's liability insurance.
It is advisable to arrange insurance immediately after determining the dates and route of the trip, not at the last moment before departure. This allows checking the terms, comparing offers, clarifying exclusions, and correcting errors in personal data. If the policy is needed for submitting documents for a visa, it must be obtained considering the requirements of the consulate and the planned duration of stay. For a long trip, studying, working, or relocating, it is worth finding out in advance whether regular tourist insurance is sufficient, whether special coverage or local health insurance upon arrival is needed.
Insurance does not guarantee automatic border crossing and does not replace a passport, visa, confirmation of purpose of travel, or other documents if they are required. Its availability is just one of the possible elements of travel preparation. The main task is to select a policy that meets the specific country's requirements and genuinely assists in case of illness or accident.
