Groundforce staff walkout at Barcelona Airport
The indefinite industrial action by Groundforce ground-handling staff at Barcelona’s El Prat Airport, under way since August 4, is expected to cause major disruption to air travel, affecting more than 11,000 flights and close to two million passengers. According to the CGT union, the protest has already forced the cancellation of 250 flights and delayed nearly 6,000 pieces of luggage.
What is being disrupted
The strike is hitting passenger check-in, boarding, ramp operations, and flight coordination across 20 carriers, including Lufthansa, Air France/KLM, Turkish Airlines, and Finnair. As Spain’s second-busiest airport, El Prat is a key hub, meaning traveler disruption could be significant.
The Sun has estimated the strike could continue until the end of September, worsening the situation for passengers. Airlines such as Ryanair, Wizz Air, easyJet, and Vueling, which operate direct UK-to-Barcelona flights, do not rely on Groundforce, so their schedules may be less affected.
Spain’s airports have been seeing broader labor unrest. In July, several staff strikes were reported at Palma de Mallorca Airport, with the potential to run through the end of summer. Combined with the higher pressure on aviation and new passport-control systems introduced in April, conditions remain tense.
