Shooting at the Washington Hilton Hotel

A shooting incident at the Washington Hilton Hotel on Saturday evening disrupted the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner. President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were all evacuated as a result. President Trump was unharmed during the event.

Law enforcement officials reported that between five and eight shots were fired. Security forces confirmed the gunfire, though no injuries have been reported. The Secret Service and the National Guard secured the building, and the hotel was surrounded. Security was heightened across Washington's government district. According to CNN, an agent confirmed that a suspect has been taken into custody.

Previous Incidents Involving Donald Trump

Earlier the same day, President Donald Trump left Florida abruptly after a suspicious hunting stand was discovered near the airport. Trump quickly boarded Air Force One at Palm Beach International Airport due to elevated security measures. No arrests were made in that incident.

In 2024, Donald Trump was the target of two assassination attempts:

  • First, during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July;
  • Then, while playing golf in Florida in September.

These events have raised concerns about the former president's safety.

The Washington incident adds to growing unease over the security of high-ranking U.S. officials. Gunfire at a high-profile event like the White House Correspondents' Dinner underscores the potential threats political leaders may face. It may also shape public opinion on safety measures for politicians, especially in light of recent attempts on Donald Trump's life. The increased security presence in the government district reflects the seriousness of the threats and the need for additional protective measures.
