For the first time in England, an artificial intelligence system successfully represented a plaintiff in court and secured a win. The claimant, Tamires Kamal Takidir, recovered a debt of £7,000. The hearing took place on May 14 at Wandsworth County Court.
Garfield AI’s platform enables users to file claims ranging from £30 to £10,000. In Takidir’s case, she turned to the service after an unpaid debt; preparing the legal letter and submitting the claim cost her around £400. A key detail is that Garfield AI received approval from the UK’s Solicitors Regulation Authority in April of last year. To represent the client in court, the company brought in barrister Dominic Lee, who noted that
“Garfield AI prepared the case materials clearly and efficiently.”

During the three-hour hearing on May 14, the AI generated four witness statements and a full bundle of documents. The court ruled in Takidir’s favor and ordered the defendant to pay the outstanding debt. Dominic Lee emphasized that
“the court appearance remained a crucial part of the process and was purely human work.”
Garfield AI co-founder Philip Young called the event ‘important for access to justice,’ noting that ‘many small businesses give up on debt recovery because legal costs can exceed the amount they could realistically recover.’
