Underage Spy Arrested in Kharkiv Region
A 17-year-old college student from the Kharkiv region has been detained by Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) and National Police on suspicion of espionage for Russian military intelligence. The teenager gathered strategic data on Ukrainian Armed Forces positions near the Izyum front line. Russian handlers recruited him through pro-Kremlin comments in private Telegram channels, after he had tried to arrange a physical attack on his stepfather due to a family dispute.
According to the SBU, Russian intelligence operatives offered the young man cooperation in exchange for carrying out his request. He traveled through the frontline area under the guise of work trips for a municipal company where he repaired roads and sidewalks. His main tasks as an informant included:
- recording Ukrainian troop positions;
- transmitting coordinates;
- adjusting artillery fire.
The traitor covertly filmed checkpoints, fortified areas, and military equipment of the Defense Forces in the Izyum sector, marking their locations on digital maps. He also reported to his handlers on the impact of Russian missiles and guided bombs to help coordinate follow-up strikes.
SBU officers arrested the agent in his dormitory room. During a search, they seized a smartphone containing photos and coordinates of potential targets. Investigators have charged him with high treason committed under martial law, which carries a sentence of 15 years to life imprisonment with asset confiscation. The court ordered him held in custody without the possibility of bail.
As the SBU stated, 'Russian intelligence agents recruited the teenager when he was trying to arrange a physical attack on his stepfather through Telegram channels due to a family conflict. In one chat, a person from Russia responded, promising to eliminate his relative in exchange for spying on behalf of the aggressor country.'
This case highlights how Russian intelligence exploits vulnerable moments in young people's lives to recruit them. It underscores the importance of information control and asset monitoring in conflict zones, as well as the risks faced by Ukrainian forces in securing their positions. Operations by such agents can have serious consequences for frontline security, prompting law enforcement to remain proactive in countering threats.
This incident highlights the ongoing threat posed by espionage in the region, similar to a recent case where the Ukrainian Security Service apprehended a Russian agent responsible for coordinating missile strikes on civilian areas.
