Kharkiv Court Sentences Border Guard Cook to Five Years for Failing to Report for Duty on February 24

Харківський суд виніс вирок кухарю прикордонників: п’ять років за несправедливий вчинок 24 лютого.

Verdict for Junior Sergeant in the Border Guard Service

On February 24, 2022, at 5:00 AM, the personnel of the 'Vilkhuvatka' border guard unit received an emergency alert. While most service members arrived at the assembly point within 20 to 30 minutes, one junior sergeant who worked as a cook did not show up. The Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Kharkiv has now sentenced her to five years in prison for absence from duty on that day. According to the verdict, she remained at home in an occupied village until July 2023. The court determined that she should have reported to any other military unit but failed to do so. The accused had no prior criminal record and is a single mother of two children. The court also found no grounds for a suspended sentence under Article 75 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The sentence was issued under Part 5 of Article 407 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Once the verdict takes legal effect, she will be detained. The court emphasized that such violations could 'demotivate other soldiers,' highlighting the gravity of the offense.

Incident in Shakhtarske

Separately, in the town of Shakhtarske, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, three men opened fire near a store and abducted a 20-year-old young man. Fighters from the 'Wolves of Da Vinci' unit are implicated in this incident. The court has ordered a 60-day pretrial detention without bail for the three suspects.

This ruling underscores the critical importance of discipline and accountability in military service, especially during wartime. Failing to fulfill service duties can have severe repercussions not only for the individual soldier but also for overall mobilization and troop morale. The case serves as a stark reminder of the legal obligations that come with military service in a time of national crisis.

Meanwhile, the Shakhtarske incident involving gunfire and kidnapping points to rising criminal activity, demanding urgent action from law enforcement agencies to ensure public safety. These two separate events highlight different but equally pressing challenges facing Ukraine today.

This case highlights the severe consequences of neglecting military duties during critical times. Similarly, a recent incident involving the former deputy head of a military recruitment office illustrates the importance of accountability in the armed forces. Both situations underscore the legal and moral responsibilities that service members face, particularly in the context of ongoing national challenges.
