Russian Agent Receives 15-Year Sentence in Kyiv
A court in Kyiv has handed down a 15-year prison term to a Russian agent convicted of setting fire to Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) facilities. The individual was caught in March 2025 while trying to destroy a signal installation that controls train traffic. Along with the prison sentence, the court ordered the confiscation of his property and required him to compensate Ukrzaliznytsia for 269,000 hryvnias in damages. This case highlights ongoing efforts to counter sabotage amid the war.
Court documents reveal that the perpetrator, a Kyiv resident, was recruited by the enemy and illegally worked as an operator for a fraudulent call center. He agreed to commit the arsons in exchange for a promise of quick money. Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) officers from the Kyiv headquarters, together with the National Police, apprehended the agent and an accomplice involved in the arsons while still hot on their trail. During a search, authorities seized smartphones, clothing, and incendiary devices from the suspects.
Law Enforcement Response
The SBU press service stated that 'based on the evidence collected by the Security Service, a Russian agent exposed in March 2025 for setting fire to a Ukrzaliznytsia signal installation in Kyiv has received a real prison sentence.'
Prosecutors noted that 'the actions of the suspects were classified as sabotage. The court sentenced one of the accused to 15 years in prison with confiscation of all his property.'
Court proceedings for the accomplice are currently ongoing. Additionally, law enforcement arrested a 23-year-old Kyiv resident who set fire to a relay cabinet and a military vehicle. Authorities in the capital have charged two men with burning four cars in the Shevchenkivskyi district. In Kyiv, two groups of arsonists were detained for torching a railway cabinet and seven military vehicles.
Despite law enforcement efforts, suspects continue seeking extra income through specialized Telegram channels. In late December 2024, one of them received an offer on Telegram to burn a military vehicle for $1,000, leading them to target a Mitsubishi L200 in the Dnipro district.
This incident underscores the urgency of combating sabotage in Ukraine amid military threats. The arrest of the Russian agent and his accomplices demonstrates the ongoing work of law enforcement in detecting and neutralizing threats to national security.
