Prague Court Sentences Tram Driver for Ejecting Ukrainian Family

Суд у Празі покарав водія трамвая за вигнання української родини.

Tram Driver Sentenced in Prague Court

A Prague court has delivered its verdict against a tram driver who forcibly ejected a Ukrainian family from his vehicle. The driver received a sentence of community service, a mandatory rehabilitation program, and a fine. This incident occurred in February 2025 and highlights ongoing social tensions in the region.

The court ordered the driver to complete 200 hours of community service. Additionally, he must undergo a social rehabilitation program and pay a fine of 55,000 Czech crowns, equivalent to approximately 110,000 Ukrainian hryvnias, to the affected couple. Prosecutors had initially charged the driver under an article for misconduct based on nationality, which carried a potential prison sentence of up to five months. However, the court ultimately classified his actions as hooliganism rather than national denigration.

Details of the Incident

The altercation began when the driver shouted at a Ukrainian couple, alleging their grandson was dirtying the tram seats. The driver then forced the elderly couple and the child out onto the street and raised his hand against the Ukrainian man. Although the driver denied his actions, the court case attracted significant public attention. It is notable that the defendant had no prior criminal record.

This case drew attention not only to the driver's conduct but also to broader national sentiments. Tomio Okamura, the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Republic, publicly criticized Ukrainian leadership, Western partners, and aid to Ukraine. He stated that Prague should not supply weapons to Kyiv. Following the new year, Okamura's initiative 'Dárek pro Putina' (A Gift for Putin) received substantial donations.

This verdict serves as an important signal regarding the treatment of foreigners and cultural minorities in the Czech Republic.

While the court ruled the driver's actions as hooliganism and not racial discrimination, the incident points to underlying societal prejudices and conflicts. Concurrently, reactions from politicians like Okamura may indicate growing tension within Czech society concerning Ukrainian refugees and the broader policy of supporting Ukraine. This situation underscores the necessity for dialogue and understanding between different nationalities in the country, as well as the impact political statements can have on public opinion.
