Teen Suspect in Wrocław Knife Attack
An 18-year-old Ukrainian national has been placed in custody for three months by a court in Wrocław, facing allegations of attempted murder. Polish prosecutors say the young man attacked a 30-year-old Polish woman with a knife inside a residential building on the evening of 1 August. The victim suffered multiple stab wounds to the neck and chest, and her condition was initially life-threatening. She was taken to hospital for treatment and released on 3 August.
The suspect was formally charged with attempted murder on the same day she was discharged. He has pleaded not guilty and declined to give testimony. On 4 August, a judge approved prosecutors' request and ordered that he remain in custody for three months. Prosecutor Mateusz Kucinski pointed to the suspect's lack of permanent residence in Poland, saying this made him a high flight risk. If convicted, he could receive life in prison under Polish law.
Ukraine's Consulate Responds
The Ukrainian consulate in Wrocław condemned the violence and urged that the perpetrator face legal consequences under Poland's laws.
“We resolutely condemn all forms of violence and aggression, no matter who the offender or victim may be. Anyone who commits a crime must be answerable under the laws of the Republic of Poland,” consulate officials said.
The case has drawn public attention at a time when Poland hosts a large number of Ukrainians who have arrived since the outbreak of the conflict. The consulate's statement underscores the principle that justice and the rule of law apply equally to everyone, regardless of nationality. By stressing the risk of flight, the court also highlighted the gravity of the charges and the potential threat to public safety. The severity of the allegations means the young man now faces the possibility of spending the rest of his life behind bars.
