A Kyiv court has sentenced a 22-year-old woman to 11 years in prison for a fatal drunk driving incident. The Holosiivskyi District Court of Kyiv delivered the verdict on February 23, 2026, concerning the crash that occurred on Starokyivska Street on November 14, 2023. The driver of an Audi was found guilty, while her male acquaintance, a passenger in the car, received a 4-year suspended sentence. This case highlights the severe legal consequences for impaired driving in Ukraine, where road safety remains a critical public concern.

The collision happened around 8:00 PM when the intoxicated Audi driver crossed into oncoming traffic and crashed into a Toyota. The accident resulted in the deaths of the 40-year-old Toyota driver and his 39-year-old passenger.

It was established that at the time of the crash, both the driver and her passenger had already been stripped of their legal right to operate any vehicles.

Court Ruling and Consequences

Following the accident, the driver and passenger fled the scene after seeking treatment at a private clinic. In addition to the prison term, the court banned the woman from driving for 10 years. The families of the deceased victims were awarded compensation totaling 5.3 million hryvnias. The driver's conviction was based on Article 130 of the Ukrainian Code on Administrative Offenses.

This case underscores the grave danger of driving under the influence and the critical importance of adhering to traffic laws.

The tragic outcome of such incidents raises ongoing questions about road safety in Ukraine and fuels public debate about stricter penalties for offenders. The court's ruling may set a significant precedent for future cases, emphasizing the necessity of holding drivers accountable for their actions on the road.
