Former Top Judge Pleads Guilty in Major Corruption Case
Ukraine's High Anti-Corruption Court has ratified a plea agreement with Vsevolod Kniaziev, the former head of the Supreme Court, who was found guilty of accepting illicit benefits. As part of the sentence, Kniaziev will serve five years in prison, is barred from holding positions in judicial and law enforcement bodies for three years, and must forfeit his property—including an apartment, a house, and personal savings exceeding $200,000. A special confiscation order covers $1.248 million, which investigators identify as the bribe amount.
Kniaziev admitted his guilt and agreed to provide incriminating testimony against other individuals involved in the case. He also committed to transferring $1.1 million to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine through the 'Come Back Alive' foundation. The investigation accuses Kniaziev of receiving a $2.7 million bribe.
Illegal Gifts and Disciplinary Actions
Separately, in 2017, Kniaziev rented an apartment in Kyiv’s Pechersk district for just 1,000 hryvnias per month. The difference between this amount and the market rental rate was classified as an unlawful gift. On December 26, 2023, the Pechersk District Court of Kyiv fined him 2,550 hryvnias and ordered the confiscation of the illegal gift valued at 906,600 hryvnias. The Kyiv Court of Appeal upheld this ruling.
The High Council of Justice launched disciplinary proceedings that led to Kniaziev’s dismissal. On December 12, 2024, the Grand Chamber of the Supreme Court confirmed the High Council of Justice’s decision to remove Kniaziev from his judicial post. The plea agreement was reached between the prosecutor from the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office and Kniaziev in accordance with Ukraine's Law on Prevention of Corruption.
