Ukrainian Forces Hold Sviatohirsk Amid Conflicting Reports

Contrary to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s statement on September 1 during a press conference in Bishkek, the city of Sviatohirsk in the Donetsk region remains firmly under the control of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Ukraine has categorically denied the Russian claims of the city’s capture, backing their position with video evidence showing key landmarks such as the city center, the Holy Dormition Sviatohirsk Lavra, and other critical sites.

The Donetsk Regional Military Administration also confirmed that reports of Sviatohirsk’s occupation are false. Vladimir Rybalkin, head of the city’s military administration who is currently in Sviatohirsk, described the situation as extremely challenging. Despite constant shelling by Russian troops and the city’s proximity to the front lines, Ukrainian control remains steadfast. The 60th Separate Mechanized Brigade oversees the city’s defense, as stated by Andriy Biletsky, commander of the Third Army Corps, who emphasized that Sviatohirsk effectively functions as a rear stronghold for Ukrainian forces.

Disinformation and Propaganda in the Conflict

Russian propaganda has also circulated false reports of capturing other settlements including Vasylivka, Dovzhanka, Blahodatne, and Slyzneve. Additionally, Russia’s Ministry of Defense claimed to have taken control of the village of Shcherbakivka in the Kharkiv region—an area that has not existed on Ukrainian maps for nearly three decades.

Video footage provided by Ukrainian troops further confirms their presence in Sviatohirsk, capturing not only the city center and the Lavra but also the monument by renowned sculptor Ivan Kavaleridze, alongside civilians who continue to live there. Despite ongoing bombardments and difficult conditions, the city remains under Ukrainian command.

The situation in Sviatohirsk highlights the critical role of information warfare within the broader Ukraine-Russia conflict. Both sides utilize propaganda and misinformation, complicating efforts to ascertain the true status on the ground. Control over cities like Sviatohirsk carries significant military and symbolic weight, underscoring its importance beyond just the battlefield.
