Sweden's Military Aid to Ukraine
Sweden is assembling a substantial new military aid package for Ukraine, potentially featuring Gripen fighter jets and Meteor missiles. Following discussions between the defense ministries of both nations, the comprehensive package is set to include both new and used aircraft alongside other critical systems. This significant support underscores Sweden's deepening commitment to Ukraine's defense. The aid is expected to consist of:
- Air defense systems
- Saab-manufactured radar systems
- Electronic warfare systems
- Long-range strike drones
According to Ukraine's Ministry of Defense, this is poised to be one of Sweden's largest military assistance packages. The Meteor missiles under consideration have a striking range exceeding 200 kilometers. To deploy these missiles, Ukraine anticipates receiving used Gripen C/D fighter jets by 2026. Sweden has also previously pledged two Saab 340 AEW&C airborne early warning and control aircraft.
The Gripen Fighter Jet Agreement
In October 2025, an agreement was finalized for Ukraine to purchase 120-150 of the latest Saab JAS 39 Gripen E fighter jets. Production of the new Gripen E aircraft is scheduled over a 15-year period, with the first deliveries expected within three years. Funding for the Gripen E contract is planned to come from frozen Russian assets. As part of this broader cooperative effort, Poland also intends to transfer MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine.
The key priorities for defense collaboration between Ukraine and Sweden are:
- Countering ballistic threats via the PURL system
- Launching the Brave-Sweden defense innovation program
- Supplying Gripen aircraft and Meteor missiles
The Gripen deal remains a high priority, even as the Ukrainian Armed Forces currently operate American F-16s and French Mirage jets. This major aid package highlights the strengthening of Ukraine's defense ties with European nations amid escalating threats from Russia. The integration of advanced technologies like Gripen and Meteor systems is crucial for enhancing Ukraine's battlefield capabilities against modern military challenges.
