Sweden's Civil Intelligence Service (FRA) has issued a warning to the energy sector, urging heightened vigilance due to intelligence suggesting preparations for an attack on critical infrastructure. This alert, issued late last week, follows a series of attacks on Poland's energy sector in late December. The warning underscores the interconnected nature of Europe's energy networks, where an attack on one nation can have ripple effects across the region.
Law enforcement agencies across Northern Europe are now ramping up security measures and have launched an international investigation to determine if a foreign state is behind the potential threat. A Swedish military intelligence and security report identifies Russia as the primary military threat to both Sweden and NATO, noting its increasingly aggressive posture. Call for Increased Vigilance
The FRA has specifically instructed Sweden's energy companies to be on high alert, focusing on preparations for potential cyberattacks and the need for robust IT system recovery plans. FRA spokesperson Ola Bylér stated:
“It is true that we have called for increased vigilance in Sweden's energy sector. We did this at the end of last week through the National Cybersecurity Centre, against the backdrop of the attacks on Poland's energy sector in late December. In this context, we believe Sweden also has reason for heightened alertness.”
