Vinnytsia will receive another 23 Tram 2000 trams from Switzerland as part of the third phase of transport cooperation. The cars will have low-floor sections for easier boarding of passengers with reduced mobility. Swiss trams have already become the backbone of urban electric transport, which carries millions of people every year. This is reported by Suspilne.
What Tram 2000 trams Vinnytsia will receive from Switzerland in the fall of 2026
New trams for the city will be transferred as part of the third phase of the memorandum with Switzerland. This concerns 23 Tram 2000 trams that will be adapted to the needs of the city transportation system.
In Vinnytsia, such trams will be modernized in a special workshop. A low-floor section developed by local specialists will be integrated into the central part of the tram. This will facilitate boarding for people in wheelchairs, passengers with strollers, and other individuals with reduced mobility.
Simultaneously, the city is rebuilding stops in accordance with accessibility requirements. Zurich has also provided equipment for washing trams, and the cars undergo a complete wash and technical maintenance weekly.
Currently, six tram routes operate in the city, passing through the center, connecting key areas and both banks of the Southern Bug River. In 2025, over 19 million passengers used trams.
«Trams play a key role in urban mobility. Together with trolleybuses, they transport about 80% of the city's public transport passengers,» said Andrii Sorokin, director of the transport and urban mobility department of Vinnytsia City Council.
How many Swiss trams has Vinnytsia received since 2006
The transport cooperation between Vinnytsia and Zurich began back in 2006. In the first phase, Switzerland transferred 116 tram cars of the models «Mirage» and «Karpfen» for free.
Later, Vinnytsia received another 66 Tram 2000 cars. Over more than 20 years of operation, Swiss trams have transported over 600 million passengers. One of the first received trams has already traveled over 300,000 km on local routes.
The cooperation has not been limited to the transfer of rolling stock. Vinnytsia transport workers have undergone training in Switzerland and adopted a scheduled maintenance system that aims to identify malfunctions before they affect tram operation.
«The value of Switzerland’s assistance lies not only in the quality of the trams we have. It is important that we have changed our approach to their operation,» noted Andrii Sorokin.
After the transfer of the next 23 Tram 2000, the city will continue to update the tram fleet and adapt it for passengers with reduced mobility. The project also includes the modernization of infrastructure, staff training, and further technical maintenance of the cars.
It should be noted that on May 28, an incident occurred at the Ninth Microdistrict stop at 10:00 PM, during which a man and a woman assaulted the tram driver.
