Switzerland Backs Ukraine’s Digital Transformation
Switzerland has formally pledged systematic support for Ukraine’s digital government over the next 10 to 12 years. This commitment followed discussions between acting Minister of Digital Transformation Oleksandr Borniakov and Jacques Gerber, the Swiss Federal Council delegate. The two sides highlighted key strategic collaboration areas, including:
- data protection and artificial intelligence
- technological sovereignty
- joint innovation
Switzerland has backed Ukraine’s digitalization efforts since the early days of the Ministry of Digital Affairs. Through the EGAP program, Ukrainians can now quickly register as individual entrepreneurs, get married online, and use the eMalyatko service. Future support will focus on developing local solutions in cybersecurity, cloud infrastructure, and artificial intelligence. Jacques Gerber, who serves as both ambassador and Swiss Federal Council delegate for Ukraine, underscored the significance of collaboration in these fields.
Ukraine’s Diia app does not store data but instead interacts with government registries, while artificial intelligence is implemented using encrypted access. New digital tools are planned in partnership with Swiss organizations and the private sector, ensuring they can operate in Ukraine, Switzerland, and the broader European market. Technological sovereignty, an agentic state, and innovation development remain central pillars of the bilateral partnership.
This agreement between Ukraine and Switzerland underscores the importance of international support in the digitalization process, which can significantly enhance the efficiency of public services and simplify citizens' lives.
In the long term, such cooperation could help integrate Ukraine into the European digital space—a crucial step for the country’s technology sector growth.
As Ukraine strengthens its digital government initiatives, the need for robust cybersecurity measures becomes increasingly critical.
