Swiss Aid to Rebuild Ukraine's War-Damaged Railways
The Ukrainian railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, will receive technical assistance from Switzerland totaling approximately 29 million euros. This funding, provided by the Swiss government, will be used to procure essential materials for restoring railway tracks and overhead power lines. The supplies will be delivered over the next three years by two private Swiss firms, Schwihag AG and Arthur Flury AG. An intergovernmental agreement formalizing this support was signed by Ukraine and Switzerland in 2025. This aid is part of broader international efforts to sustain Ukraine's vital transportation network, which has been a lifeline for its economy and people during the conflict.
Scope of Supplies and Their Impact
Under the new agreement, Ukrzaliznytsia will receive over 1.04 million sets of rail fastenings, enabling the renewal of roughly 250 kilometers of track. Additionally, about 4,000 sets of section insulators for the overhead contact network will be supplied, which will facilitate the modernization of approximately 36% of the entire electrical grid.
It is worth noting that under previous similar agreements, more than 1.8 million rail fastenings worth over 25.3 million euros have already been supplied by Schwihag AG. With these new deliveries, Ukrzaliznytsia will be able to significantly improve Ukraine's railway infrastructure, which should positively impact the overall level and reliability of transportation.
This agreement is a crucial step in rebuilding Ukrainian railway infrastructure, especially as the country faces immense challenges in its transport sector.
Support from Switzerland will not only aid in modernizing tracks and power networks but may also open new avenues for cooperation between Ukraine and European nations on future infrastructure projects. In the long term, this could positively influence Ukraine's economic development and its integration into wider European transport networks.
