Wind Power Expansion in 2025
The global wind power sector experienced a significant acceleration in 2025, adding 169 gigawatts (GW) of new capacity. This represents a 35% increase over the growth seen in 2024. The world's total installed wind power capacity now exceeds 1,346 GW, with wind energy meeting approximately 11% of global electricity demand, equivalent to around 3,000 terawatt-hours (TWh) of power. This rapid expansion underscores the technology's increasing competitiveness and its central role in the global energy transition.
China continues to be the undisputed global leader in this field, accounting for half of the world's total wind power capacity. In 2025 alone, the country installed 130 GW of new capacity, a 49% year-on-year increase. Remarkably, China was responsible for 77% of the entire global market for new wind installations. Outside of China, new capacity additions totaled 38.7 GW. Leading contributors among other nations included:
- India: 6,300 MW;
- United States: 6,272 MW;
- Germany: 4,602 MW;
- Vietnam: 2,493 MW;
- Brazil: 2,244 MW;
- Turkey: 2,142 MW.
Global Trends and Growth Rates
Several countries now rely on wind power for over 20% of their electricity consumption, including Denmark, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Ireland, and Uruguay. The growth rate for wind power in 2025 reached its highest level since 2020. The annual growth rates for key markets were:
- Vietnam: 50.8%;
- Chile: 23.9%;
- China: 23.2%;
- Turkey: 15.5%;
- India: 13.1%;
- Brazil: 6.7%;
- Germany: 6.3%;
- France: 5.2%;
- United States: 4.1%;
- United Kingdom: 3.1%.
Experts from the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA) note: 'The electrification of transport, heating, and cooling sectors further amplifies the potential of wind power.
