New Requirement: Travel Insurance for Visitors to Tanzania and Zanzibar
Beginning October 1, 2024, all travelers entering Tanzania and Zanzibar will be required to have travel insurance. The insurance fee is set at $44 for adults and $22 for children aged 3 to 17. This policy, ratified by Tanzania's Ministry of Finance on September 4, 2024, aims to enhance the safety and security of international visitors.
How to Obtain Your Insurance
Travelers heading to mainland Tanzania must secure insurance through the National Insurance Corporation (NIC), while those visiting Zanzibar should go through the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC). The coverage lasts for the entire stay, up to 92 days, and tourists do not need separate policies for the mainland and Zanzibar. Insurance can be purchased online or upon arrival at entry points. It's important to note that only NIC policies are accepted for mainland Tanzania; other providers are not permitted.
In 2025, Tanzania welcomed 2.29 million foreign tourists. Groups traveling together can take advantage of a 10% discount on insurance premiums.
“Come for the adventure. Come for business. Come for our people, culture, wildlife, and unforgettable experiences. Wherever your journey leads, may it be safe and worry-free. Good insurance is more than just a policy—it's peace of mind knowing help is there when you need it.” - National Insurance Corporation (NIC)
This new insurance mandate is expected to improve the overall safety and comfort of visitors exploring these stunning destinations. By providing travelers with added protection, Tanzania and Zanzibar aim to boost confidence in their tourism sectors, which welcomed millions just last year. In an increasingly interconnected world with heightened safety expectations, such measures are key to positioning Tanzania as a secure and appealing travel destination.
