Tarakaniv Fort in Rivne Region Officially Recognized as a Protected Cultural Landmark

Форт Тараканів у Рівненській області отримав статус охоронюваної культурної пам'ятки.

Tarakaniv Fort: A Historic Treasure of Ukraine

The Ministry of Culture of Ukraine has formally added Tarakaniv Fort, located in the Rivne region, to the State Register of Immovable Monuments, granting this 19th-century fortress official protection. Nestled near the village of Tarakaniv on a hilltop surrounded by forest in the Ikva River valley, this fortification was designed by military engineer Eduard Totleben and stands as a prime example of the era’s defensive architecture.

Though the fort played a strategic role during World War I, it is currently in a state of disrepair and closed to the public. In spring 2026, part of the structure collapsed, blocking one of its entrances. The fort is managed by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and is situated close to the Kyiv-Chop international highway. It remains one of the most notable historical landmarks in Rivne Oblast.

The Importance of Preserving Cultural Heritage

Tatyana Berezhna, a representative from the Ministry of Culture, emphasized: "Our mission is to document the value of cultural heritage and ensure historical sites receive the protection they deserve."

The inclusion of Tarakaniv Fort in the national register highlights the Ukrainian government's commitment to safeguarding its cultural legacy. Despite its current fragile condition, this protected status lays the groundwork for future restoration efforts aimed at preserving the site for future generations. Protecting such landmarks plays a vital role in Ukraine’s cultural policy, supporting tourism development and raising public awareness of the country’s rich history.
