Taras Topolya's Stance on Joining the Verkhovna Rada
As the lead singer of the Ukrainian band Antytila, Taras Topolya has made his position clear regarding a potential role in the Verkhovna Rada. He has stated that he does not plan to enter parliament, believing he can influence lawmakers through his public fame instead. Topolya currently serves as deputy co-chair and spokesperson for the Presidential Youth Council in Ukraine, a role he considers more effective for shaping youth policy.
In his comments, Topolya emphasized that he sees no current need to engage in politics at the parliamentary level.
“I still don’t understand why I would need to become a member of the Verkhovna Rada,” he said.
The singer also expressed that “the scope of tasks facing our team does not require me to go to the Rada.” Topolya stressed he has no desire to formalize his role in politics, adding: “I really don’t want to formalize myself into politics in any way.”
Topolya’s Background and Activism
He further recalled his experience as a UNICEF Youth Ambassador in Ukraine, where a clause in his memorandum specified that he would remain apolitical.
“Fortunately, I was a UNICEF Youth Ambassador in Ukraine, and my memorandum included a clause stating I would stay out of politics,” Topolya noted.
He also clarified that he does not view his work on the youth council as political, since it brings together people with diverse political views: “I don’t consider this politics, because the youth council gathers individuals with different political perspectives.”
Notably, the band Antytila has not been demobilized from military service but was transferred to Kyiv under an order from Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, now Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Kingdom. Consequently, Topolya and his team remain actively engaged amid the war, leaving questions about his political career open.
Topolya’s statements reveal his intention to avoid traditional political office and instead focus on youth policy through the influence of his celebrity status. This approach may reflect a desire to involve young people in critical social issues without stepping into formal politics. During wartime, his active participation in public initiatives could play a key role in boosting youth morale and advancing societal development.
