Mobile Bills Outpace Pensions in Ukraine: How to Cut Costs by Up to 50%

Зростання витрат на мобільний зв'язок в Україні: способи зменшення рахунків на 50%

Rising Mobile Costs in Ukraine

In Ukraine, the cost of mobile services is increasing at a faster rate than pension adjustments, creating significant financial strain, particularly for the elderly. Many older citizens, who often use basic 'button' phones, are forced to pay for data packages they cannot technically use. This situation makes finding ways to reduce communication expenses critically important for household budgets.

Options for Saving Money

One effective strategy is switching to a different mobile operator while keeping your phone number, a process known as Mobile Number Portability (MNP). This often allows customers to access special promotional offers. For example:

  • Kyivstar: The 'ALL TOGETHER Comfort' plan costs 220 UAH per month and includes 10 GB of data, unlimited calls within the Kyivstar network, 100 minutes to other networks, and 100 SMS. To activate this tariff, you must visit an official store with your passport.
  • Lifecell: For new subscribers or those switching via MNP, the 'Lifeset M' plan costs 175 UAH for 4 weeks and includes 25 GB of data, unlimited calls to Lifecell numbers, 1300 minutes to other networks, and home internet. The 'Maxi' plan is also available at a promotional price of 190 UAH for 45 GB.
  • Vodafone: The 'Flexx GO' plan costs 280 UAH per month for customers switching from another operator and includes unlimited data and calls within Vodafone's network, plus 1000 minutes to other destinations. Notably, Vodafone does not offer separate 'pensioner' plans.

Signing a contract can also be advantageous, as it may provide a discount and allow for installment payments. According to experts, switching to a new operator can save 30-50% on your package cost for the first six months—a substantial relief given the rising cost of living.

For older users, it's crucial to inquire about special offers. It is recommended to explicitly ask for a senior-specific tariff in operator stores and to monitor account charges to avoid unwanted paid subscriptions. The process of switching operators is now quick and simple, and in the current economic climate, it can be a vital step in managing monthly expenses.

The increase in mobile service tariffs in Ukraine, occurring alongside rising prices for other essentials, places an additional financial burden on the most vulnerable segments of the population. This is especially true for the elderly, who may be unable to access more favorable plans due to the technical limitations of older phones or a lack of information about new market offerings.
