Ukrainians with extended passports are banned from leaving the country: what to do

Громадянам України з відкритими паспортами заборонено виїжджати за межі країни: які кроки вжити?

Recently, Ukrainians were warned about the necessity to urgently replace their foreign passports. From the end of October 2025, new rules will be in effect in Ukraine, according to which passports with an extended validity will no longer be accepted at the border. Previously, this option was allowed, but now everyone must comply with the current regulations regarding foreign documents.

During the crisis caused by the Russian invasion, the authorities introduced a temporary extension of passport validity to ensure the normal functioning of the passport system. However, after full recovery, the government decided to abandon this practice and adhere to international standards.

Adults aged 16 and older will be issued passports for 10 years, while minors will receive them for 4 years. Now, each individual must have their own foreign document, and information about children will not be included in their parents' passports.

Those who find themselves abroad with an expired passport are advised to call the Ukrainian consulate for a certificate that will allow them to return home without hindrance. This certificate is provided free of charge for children, while adults must pay established fees.

If you are denied entry to EU countries, do not waste time and contact the relevant services to obtain a new biometric passport. It should be noted that most countries recognize documents with a validity of up to 10 years, and airlines may refuse boarding to those with extended passports.

Ukrainians are advised to adhere to the new rules and make their travels with valid documents to avoid unpleasant situations at the border. In case of any doubts or questions, it is better to seek consultation from specialists.
