May 1st Attack on Ternopil
On the afternoon of May 1, Ternopil came under a massive assault by Russian forces using attack drones. More than 50 of these unmanned aerial vehicles were deployed against the city, resulting in over twenty explosions. The strikes hit industrial and infrastructure sites, causing severe damage.
As of now, 10 people are reported wounded, some in serious condition. All casualties are receiving medical care, and no fatalities have been confirmed. The city council has stated that several neighborhoods remain without electricity, leading to a temporary suspension of public transport services.
Official and Emergency Response
The first blasts occurred around 1:10 PM as the drones passed through the Khmelnytskyi region en route to Ternopil. For safety reasons, 39 people were evacuated from the affected zone. Mayor Serhiy Nadal urged residents to exercise caution:
“Hazardous debris may be scattered across the city. Do not approach or touch it. Parents, warn your children: do not pick up any objects. If you spot anything suspicious, call 101.” - Serhiy Nadal
Emergency teams are actively working at the impact sites, including:
- police officers
- patrol units
- investigative task forces
- forensic experts
- explosive ordnance disposal technicians
- State Emergency Service rescuers
- medical personnel
Firefighters are extinguishing blazes, medics are tending to the injured, and law enforcement is documenting the aftermath. Serhiy Ziubanenko, a law enforcement official, noted:
“Police, patrol units, investigative teams, forensic specialists, bomb technicians, State Emergency Service rescuers, and medics are all operating at the strike sites.” - Serhiy Ziubanenko
Ternopil continues to endure hostile attacks, which have intensified in recent days. Many residents are grappling with uncertainty and fear, hoping for a swift return to normal life in the city.
This assault is part of a broader escalation in the conflict in Ukraine, driven by ongoing Russian aggression. Like numerous other towns, Ternopil is facing the war’s repercussions, which deeply affect local residents’ safety and daily lives. City authorities and law enforcement are taking steps to protect the population, but the situation remains tense.
Despite the ongoing threats and chaos from drone strikes, local congregations in Ternopil have maintained their worship services. This resilience reflects the community's determination to uphold their traditions in the face of adversity, even as the situation remains dire.
