Italy decided at the end of 2025 to extend temporary protection for Ukrainian citizens. Ukrainians who already have a residence permit within the humanitarian status will be able to renew documents and legally stay in the country until March 2027. The decision is in line with the European Union's approach and guarantees continued access to work and social services. This is reported by VisitUkraine.
The extension applies to Ukrainians who are in Italy under temporary protection and have a permesso di soggiorno protezione speciale. The new validity dates of the documents are synchronized with the decision of the EU Council.
Temporary protection for Ukrainians in Italy: legal basis for the decision
On December 31, 2025, the decree-law No. 201 was published in the official bulletin Gazzetta Ufficiale. The document provides for urgent measures to extend the permesso di soggiorno for Ukrainian citizens with temporary protection.
This decision is directly related to the extension of the action of temporary protection in the European Union until March 4, 2027. Thus, Italian rules have been aligned with European norms, providing legal certainty for Ukrainians.
Permesso di soggiorno in Italy: validity periods and renewal procedure
The permesso di soggiorno, which expires on March 4, 2026, can be renewed in accordance with the new decree. This allows maintaining the protezione speciale status without the need to change the type of stay.
To renew the document, it is necessary to:
-
make an appointment at the Questura to update the card permesso di soggiorno;
-
prepare a basic package of documents and a valid residence permit;
-
undergo the renewal procedure after the launch of the booking system, which is expected in mid-January 2026.
The extension of temporary protection allows Ukrainians to continue living and working legally in Italy until March 4, 2027. At the same time, specialists advise to monitor the opening of appointments at the Questura in advance to avoid delays in document renewal.
Earlier we wrote that temporary protection in Lithuania will end in 2027.
