Timothy Snyder’s Perspective on Donald Trump’s Global Weakness

Renowned American historian Timothy Snyder has critically assessed Donald Trump’s faltering position on the world stage, particularly focusing on the failed trade war with China and the ongoing conflict in Iran. According to Snyder, Trump suffered a clear defeat in his trade confrontation with China and has been unable to resolve the protracted violence in Iran, which has now persisted for eight months. Despite Trump’s promise to end hostilities with Iran within two to three weeks, the situation has instead prolonged, forcing continued military engagement.

US-China Relations and Trade Tensions

In an interview with Kai Wright for The Guardian’s Stateside podcast, Snyder revealed that US tariffs on Chinese imports had escalated to 145% by spring 2025. Yet, following Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Washington in late September 2026, both nations agreed on mutual tariff reductions amounting to roughly $30 billion each, signaling a partial easing of tensions.

“From an outside perspective, Trump is consistently retreating. He lost the trade war to China. He also lost the conflict with Iran, and sooner rather than later, Tehran will dictate the terms.” - Timothy Snyder

Analyzing internal US politics, Snyder noted the Republican Party remains largely submissive to Trump, whom he describes as a weak figure. He also pointed to reports of American negotiators traveling to Moscow under the pretense of discussing Ukraine, while in reality securing oil deals that benefit themselves. This, according to Snyder, illustrates the near absence of opposition to Trump within the US, underscoring his declining influence internationally.

Snyder’s evaluation sheds light on the significant challenges facing the Trump administration’s foreign policy and warns of potential repercussions for the United States’ standing worldwide. His insights reflect broader global concerns where US actions have the potential to impact regional stability, especially in Asia and the Middle East. These developments may shape the future trajectory of international relations and America’s role on the global stage.
