Tragedy in Kharkiv

On March 12, a tragedy occurred in Kharkiv when a group of six children fell through the thin spring ice on an artificial lake. A displaced person, Serhiy Soratokin, who is a resident of Velykyi Burluk in the Kupiansk district, saved four children, including one girl and two boys, and then another girl. Unfortunately, two boys, aged 11 and 17, died. The older teenager tried to help the younger children but could not save himself.

After the rescue, Serhiy Soratokin lost consciousness due to hypothermia and was hospitalized. The mayor of Kharkiv, Ihor Terekhov, presented him with an award for heroism in this emergency situation. Ihor Terekhov also emphasized the importance of teaching children about safety on the ice, giving instructions to conduct safety lessons on behavior on the ice in all schools of the city.

'We all must draw very serious conclusions. I have already instructed to urgently conduct safety lessons on ice behavior in all schools of the city. But no school events can replace a parent's words.'
— Ihor Terekhov, Mayor of Kharkiv

The Danger of Spring Warmth

This situation serves as a reminder of the danger that spring warmth can pose to children and youth, who may not realize the risks associated with being on the ice.

The deadly incident underscores the necessity of raising awareness about ice safety among children and their parents. It is important for parents to actively engage in teaching their children the basics of safety, as even short walks near bodies of water can pose a serious threat. Local authorities also plan to take measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future by organizing educational programs in schools.
