Carbon Monoxide Leak at Vinnytsia Care Home Claims Two Lives

Трагедія в будинку для літніх людей у Вінниці: двоє людей загинули через витік чадного газу.

Fatal Incident in Vinnytsia

A carbon monoxide poisoning incident at a private care home for the elderly in Vinnytsia has resulted in two fatalities and two hospitalizations. Law enforcement has already notified the facility's administrator of suspicion of wrongdoing. Police received the initial report on the morning of January 27.

Four individuals were poisoned, including two women, aged 80 and 101, who could not be saved. The other two victims, aged 83 and 93, were hospitalized. The tragedy was caused by the use of a generator inside a boiler room that shared a ventilation system with the rest of the premises.

The 44-year-old female administrator turned on the generator on the evening before the incident but failed to move it outside, allowing the deadly gas to seep into an adjacent room where the victims were located. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that is particularly dangerous in enclosed spaces.

  • The criminal charge filed carries a potential penalty of up to eight years of imprisonment.
  • In a separate incident in the Bucha district, three family members—a married couple and their 11-year-old child—were found dead in a townhouse from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Their four-year-old son was hospitalized in serious condition.
  • The preliminary cause in this case is a faulty gas boiler.

Conclusions and Calls for Action

These consecutive tragedies highlight critical safety failures in facilities for the elderly and underscore the vital importance of proper maintenance for gas and electrical appliances. Authorities and relevant bodies must implement measures to prevent similar incidents, including enhanced safety inspections for such institutions.

The situation also raises broader concerns about the state of ventilation systems in residential and commercial buildings, which can directly impact the health and safety of occupants.
