Severe Storms and Military Attacks Hit Ukraine on June 29, 2024
On June 29, 2024, Ukraine faced a devastating combination of extreme weather and ongoing Russian military assaults. In Lviv, a six-year-old girl was hospitalized after being struck by lightning. The city also saw widespread damage from strong winds, which toppled 30 trees—nine in the Halytskyi district and seven in the Shevchenkivskyi district. The latter area suffered damage to the district administration building and seven cars.
Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi commented:
“The Halytskyi district was hit the hardest, with nine trees falling.”
Beyond the storms, Ukraine once again came under attack from Russian forces. In Dnipro, bombings killed six people and raised the number of injured to 29. The assault caused extensive destruction, damaging businesses, vocational schools, private homes, and vehicles.
Strikes on Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv
Zaporizhzhia was also targeted by Russian troops, who launched a series of drone attacks. An FPV drone struck a minibus, killing three people. Another Russian drone exploded near a bus, injuring seven individuals, including two children.
In Kharkiv, the Russian military used a guided aerial bomb (KAB) to attack the Kholodnohirskyi district. The strike killed a 23-year-old woman who had come to the city for her graduation ceremony. Twelve people were wounded, with one victim in extremely critical condition.
The events of June 29, 2024, highlight the dire situation in Ukraine, where natural disasters and military aggression combine to create perilous conditions for civilians. This tragic intersection of a storm and relentless Russian attacks has resulted in significant casualties, widespread destruction, and heightened social tension. It underscores the urgent need for continued international support to address the consequences of both natural calamities and armed conflict.
The recent events in Ukraine are part of a broader pattern of escalating violence, as seen in the recent attacks in Kropyvnytskyi and Poltava, which resulted in multiple injuries. This ongoing conflict not only exacerbates the humanitarian crisis but also raises concerns about the safety of civilians amidst both military actions and severe weather conditions.
