Trump Seeks Congressional Takeover of Kennedy Center After Court Ruling

Трамп планує змінити управління Центром Кеннеді після ухвали суду.

Shift in Control for Kennedy Center

President Donald Trump has announced plans to hand over authority of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to the U.S. Congress. This move follows a federal judge's decision to block the administration's proposal to shut down the venue for a two-year renovation. U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper of the District of Columbia ordered the administration to remove Trump's name from the building, which is legally designated to honor only the late President John F. Kennedy. The court found that the board's closure decision was based on a one-sided and incomplete project presentation.

The Kennedy Center, built as a living memorial after Kennedy's assassination in 1963, operates as an independent branch of the Smithsonian Institution. Funding for its repairs was separately allocated by the U.S. Congress. Trump has directed the Department of Commerce to take steps toward transferring the facility, while the center's new leadership, led by Executive Director Matt Floca, has stressed the urgent need for maintenance. However, the renaming of the venue has led to a drop in ticket sales for artistic events.

Court Decisions and Their Aftermath

The court order does not prevent routine repairs or a future closure decision following an independent review. The planned July shutdown was an attempt to hide financial losses, though this remains speculative. Meanwhile, in December 2025, Congress introduced a bill to prohibit naming federal buildings after sitting presidents. The bill's sponsor is Democrat April McClain.

Other Trump initiatives facing legal challenges include:

  • demolishing the East Wing of the White House;
  • applying a blue protective coating to the reflecting pool at the Lincoln Memorial;
  • building a 76-meter triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery.
“The arts center is a ‘dysfunctional institution,’” Trump stated.

At the same time, the president continues to address other critical issues, such as the war in Iran, the fuel crisis, and the approval of a peace agreement with Tehran.

This situation surrounding the Kennedy Center highlights broader challenges facing the Trump administration, including legal disputes and public backlash against its decisions. As the president seeks to maintain influence over cultural institutions, this case also underscores the importance of judicial independence in the United States. Future leadership changes at the center could affect its financial health and reputation within the country's cultural landscape.

As the political landscape continues to shift, the implications of Trump's recent actions extend beyond the Kennedy Center. For a deeper understanding of how his administration is impacting the system of governance, including a significant dismantling of checks and balances, it's essential to examine the broader context of his controversial decisions.
