Announcement of the construction of new battleships for the US Navy
Donald Trump announced the construction of new battleships for the US Navy, emphasizing their power. According to the president, the new ships will be the deadliest in history. However, analysts warn about the vulnerability of large ships in modern conflicts, relying on Ukraine's experience.
Project 'Golden Flotilla'
The US Navy plans to implement a project called 'Golden Flotilla'. Trump noted:
'This is a huge plan, and we are building for the US Navy. As you know, we are catastrophically short of ships.' - Donald Trump
However, there are concerns that the new battleships may become targets for new means of warfare that have already demonstrated their effectiveness.
In particular, Ukraine has changed its tactics in naval battles, using available technologies such as:
- inexpensive sea and air drones, which are becoming a mass weapon;
- successful drone attacks by Sea Baby against the Russian fleet in the Black Sea, Atlantic, and Mediterranean.
These drones can strike commercial and military vessels without guaranteed protection. Additionally, the use of Ukrainian Neptune missiles has confirmed that even the largest enemy ships can be sunk by relatively inexpensive means of destruction.
This raises doubts about the feasibility of investing in large surface ships, considering that the combination of submarines and swarms of drones in the future may leave little chance for traditional surface forces.
Thus, while the construction of new battleships may be an ambitious project, Ukraine's experience points to potential risks and vulnerabilities that may affect the effectiveness of large military ships in future conflicts. In the context of developing modern technologies and new tactics of warfare, armies must rethink their strategies to ensure maximum effectiveness and safety of their forces at sea.
