Donald Trump’s Visit to China
During a tour of Beijing’s Zhongnanhai compound—a former imperial garden—U.S. President Donald Trump made a personal request to Chinese leader Xi Jinping: could he have some rose seeds from the restricted government site? Xi agreed to send seeds for an American rose garden. The request came as the two leaders walked the grounds of the historic complex, which now serves as China’s top political leadership headquarters.
Talks and Cooperation
On May 14, Trump arrived at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing for high-stakes negotiations with Xi. The discussions covered critical global issues, including:
- the war in Ukraine
- the situation in the Middle East
- challenges on the Korean Peninsula
- the Taiwan question
Trump also formally invited Xi to visit the White House on September 24, 2026.
'These are the most beautiful roses anyone has ever seen. I asked the president: Could you send me some for the rose garden, and he agreed. I have never seen roses so large.'
Donald Trump
Trump’s remark highlights his fascination with Chinese horticulture and hints at potential bilateral cooperation in gardening. Notably, last year Trump renovated the White House Rose Garden, replacing the lawn with a patio inspired by his Florida club.
This seed exchange may symbolize deeper diplomatic ties between the United States and China, especially amid discussions of major international issues. Cooperation in areas like horticulture could serve as a foundation for strengthening relations between two countries that have recently faced various challenges. Xi’s invitation to the White House also signals both leaders’ intent to continue dialogue and diplomatic efforts going forward.
As the leaders discussed various pressing global matters, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the war in Ukraine emerged as a significant point of dialogue. This highlights the multifaceted nature of their discussions, where even seemingly unrelated topics, like horticulture, could pave the way for deeper diplomatic engagement.
