Trump's Stance on Iran

U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated that future developments with Iran hinge on Tehran's position. He questioned the need for Iran's nuclear program, pointing out that the country holds the world's third-largest oil reserves.

'I tell them: you probably have the third-largest oil reserves in the world. Why the hell do you need a nuclear program?' Trump remarked.

Trump also emphasized that Western nations control Iran's frozen assets, calling the issue of returning them straightforward.

'We have taken a lot of their money. It is not our money—it is their money that was frozen at a certain point. I think we will have to give it back. If we do not, no one will invest in the dollar anymore,' the U.S. president stressed.

Humanitarian Situation in Iran

Additionally, Trump expressed concern over the humanitarian situation in Iran, stating that the world cannot allow a humanitarian catastrophe there. He cited a figure of 91 million people potentially facing starvation in Iran:

'Are you going to allow 91 million people to die of hunger?' Trump asked.

He did not rule out his personal involvement in signing a peace agreement with Iran, stating: 'Maybe I will stay.'

Furthermore, a memorandum of understanding between the U.S. and Iran has come to light. Al Arabiya published its key provisions, which include:

  • restoring shipping in the region;
  • gradually lifting sanctions against Tehran;
  • unfreezing Iranian assets;
  • large-scale funding for the country's reconstruction after a final agreement is reached.

These remarks from Trump point to a potential new phase in U.S.-Iran relations, where economic interests and humanitarian issues could become central factors. The memorandum of understanding suggests a possible shift in approaches to sanctions and economic support, which could impact regional stability and global energy markets. It will be important to monitor the next steps by both sides regarding these agreements and their implementation.

As the situation evolves, it's crucial to consider the recent developments in U.S.-Iran relations, especially after Iran's leader endorsed a nuclear agreement, which led Trump to reconsider military actions. This backdrop may significantly influence the negotiations surrounding Iran's nuclear ambitions and the humanitarian crisis highlighted by Trump.
