Trump on Ukraine: 'You have no cards' and a peace plan in favor of Russia

Трамп про Україну: «У вас немає важелів» та мирний план на користь Росії.

Donald Trump's views on the Russian-Ukrainian conflict

U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his views on the Russian-Ukrainian conflict during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in early 2023. Trump noted that Zelensky has no trump cards in negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating:

“You have no cards.” - Donald Trump
His comments suggest that he believes Ukraine's position is weaker in the context of the conflict.

The meeting took place against the backdrop of increased diplomatic efforts by European leaders who organized talks in the Vatican to restore relations between the U.S. and Ukraine. Seven European leaders, among them:

  • Sir Keir Starmer
  • Emmanuel Macron
  • Friedrich Merz
  • Giorgia Meloni
  • Alexander Stubb
  • Mark Rutte
  • Ursula von der Leyen

accompanied Zelensky during his visit to Washington.

Trump also met with Putin in Alaska in August 2023, indicating a continuing dialogue between the U.S. and Russia. During the discussion of the peace process, Zelensky presented a 28-point plan that, according to Trump,

“is heavily skewed in favor of Russia.” - Donald Trump
This plan includes, among other things, reducing the Ukrainian army to 600,000 servicemen and enshrining in Ukraine's constitution the provision that NATO membership is impossible.

Furthermore, Trump noted that “we feel that the Russian position is indeed being heard,” which may indicate that the U.S. is ready to reconsider its approaches in relations with Russia. He also expressed the opinion that Putin could be readmitted to the G8. Trump reminded that he initially promised to resolve the war in Ukraine within one day after returning to the White House. These comments underscore the complexity of the situation Ukraine finds itself in amid international politics.

Trump's statements reflect not only his personal position but also possible changes in U.S. policy toward Ukraine and Russia. In the context of growing tensions between the West and Moscow, such comments may affect further diplomatic efforts and strategies being developed to resolve the conflict. Recognizing Ukraine's weakness in negotiations may lead to a reassessment of support from the U.S. and their allies in Europe.
