US President Donald Trump stated that he had a 'wonderful' conversation with Alexander Lukashenko, calling him a 'very respected president of Belarus'. The phone call concerned the release of prisoners, for which Trump expressed gratitude to the country's leader.
'I had a wonderful conversation with the highly respected president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko. The purpose of the call was to thank him for the release of 16 prisoners', Trump stated.
It should be noted that among those released were individuals whom Lukashenko pardoned before the country's Independence Day. In addition, Trump and Lukashenko discussed the issue of releasing another 1300 prisoners, as well as Vladimir Putin's plans to visit Alaska. According to Trump, he looks forward to meeting with Lukashenko in the future.
It is worth mentioning that the conversation took place after Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine visited Belarus, during which some political prisoners were released, including Sergey Tikhanovsky. This step could indicate some progress in relations between the US and Belarus.
