Cancellation of the military attack on Iran
On August 2, 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the cancellation of a prepared large-scale military attack on Iran. Trump made this statement aboard Air Force One, CNN reports. At the same time, he announced the resumption of bilateral negotiations scheduled for Monday, August 3.
The U.S. Armed Forces were at full combat readiness to launch a strike, but the postponement of the attack was made possible due to the insistence of key partners in the region, in particular:
- Saudi Arabia
- The United Arab Emirates
- Qatar
And also at the initiative of Tehran. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman insisted on de-escalating the conflict during a phone call.
Trump indicated that negotiations with Iran would commence on August 3 and expressed hope for their effectiveness.
“They knew about the scale of the attack because they saw how it was being prepared. Now we are negotiating with them. They will start tomorrow afternoon, and we will see what comes of it,”the U.S. president noted. He also added that there is an agreement regarding the Strait of Hormuz and plans for a future agreement concerning Iran's nuclear program.
Trump did not answer questions about potential targets of the canceled attack, particularly regarding energy infrastructure. Meanwhile, Iranian state media denied requests to the U.S. president to stop the bombardments. The semi-official Fars agency stated that the American side had run out of forces. It is worth noting that on the night of July 29, Iran launched ballistic missiles at one of the American military bases in the Middle East, marking the first attack after the cessation of strikes.

Thus, the situation around Iran remains tense, but at the moment, an opportunity has emerged for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict.
