US Efforts to Facilitate Peace Between Ukraine and Russia
Donald Trump revealed ongoing cooperation between the United States and the leaders of Ukraine and Russia aimed at bringing the war between the two nations to a close. He highlighted the devastating toll of the conflict, stating that approximately 25,000 young individuals, mostly soldiers, lose their lives every month. Trump expressed optimism that peace could be achieved sooner than most expect, emphasizing that enough lives have already been lost. He described the impact of the war as deeply horrifying.
Trump’s Expanded Authority and Legislative Actions
In his new presidential capacity, Trump signed legislation passed by Congress granting him enhanced authority over customs tariffs.
“Last week, in honor of Senator Lindsey Graham, I signed into law a significant bill empowering me with broad tariff powers; if necessary, I will use these powers. It is time to stop the killings,” Trump stated.
Trump also praised the efforts of the First Lady of the United States, who has been instrumental in reuniting displaced Ukrainian and Russian children with their families.
“I want to commend our wonderful First Lady for her exceptional work in safely returning many displaced Ukrainian and Russian children to their homes and loved ones. So many children have been reunited. Thank you sincerely, First Lady,” he said.
Following talks between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, an agreement was reached to hold a meeting in New York on September 22. Meanwhile, the Kremlin has not ruled out resuming peace negotiations involving Russia, Ukraine, and the US in a trilateral format. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented that it is too early to confirm the location and timing of such talks but noted that ongoing discussions in Moscow and Kyiv, involving special envoys from the US president Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, could help advance the end of the war.
Additionally, Trump signed a comprehensive sanctions bill against Russia and Iran—HR 5334—signaling a more assertive US stance toward these countries. His initiatives regarding conflict resolution, tariff authority, and humanitarian efforts to return displaced children may prove pivotal steps toward regional peace.
Trump’s proactive measures, including engagement in peace talks and new legislative approvals, reflect the US commitment to stabilizing the region.
