Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he had secured a one-week pause in attacks on Ukraine from Vladimir Putin. Trump stated he personally requested the Kremlin halt strikes due to extreme winter frosts, with the pause intended to last from Sunday to Sunday. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russia violated this agreement by launching a record number of ballistic missile strikes. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of securing diplomatic agreements in the midst of active conflict.
Ukraine's Response and Russia's Subsequent Actions
Following the announcement, large-scale attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure were largely absent from January 30. Yet, after the agreed period ended, Russia launched a powerful strike on the night of February 3. Zelenskyy emphasized that Moscow disregarded Trump's request, not even waiting for the full week to conclude. He noted that Russia responded to U.S. diplomatic efforts with its highest use of ballistic missiles to date.
Zelenskyy pointed out that Russia is deliberately exploiting the peak of winter cold as a pressure tactic to force Ukraine's surrender. Recent strikes have targeted railway logistics and gas infrastructure. The Ukrainian president also stated that Ukraine is prepared to refrain from attacking Russian fuel and energy facilities, provided the aggressor completely ceases strikes on Ukrainian power generation and distribution networks.
