Trump's Appeal to Putin
During a White House meeting, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he personally appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin to pause the shelling of Ukrainian cities for one week due to severe cold weather, a request to which Putin agreed. This announcement came amid reports of ongoing talks between Ukrainian, U.S., and Russian delegations in Abu Dhabi. The request highlights the complex diplomatic channels being utilized amidst the ongoing conflict.
Trump specified that his appeal was for a cessation of strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian settlements for the week-long duration of the extreme frosts.
"I personally asked President Putin not to shell Kyiv, cities, and towns for a week while these extreme frosts last. He agreed to do it," Trump noted.
He further emphasized that this was a very gracious gesture on Putin's part, adding that many had doubted such an outcome was possible.
According to Trump, Ukraine initially did not believe this was possible but was subsequently very pleased with the agreement.
"This is not what they need—missiles flying into their cities and towns," the U.S. President commented.
This development follows earlier reports from Volodymyr Zelenskyy regarding negotiations in Abu Dhabi, where U.S. Special Envoy Stephen Witkoff indicated significant progress in dialogue and preparations for a new meeting.
Humanitarian Situation and Negotiations
Trump's statement reflects attempts to de-escalate the conflict in Ukraine against the backdrop of abnormal weather conditions that could worsen the humanitarian crisis. Putin's agreement suggests a certain willingness for dialogue, though it remains unclear whether this will lead to lasting peace or stability in the region. The international community watches closely as these parallel diplomatic tracks unfold.
Simultaneously, the Abu Dhabi talks may indicate potential progress in peace efforts between the parties, although the details of their agreements remain unknown.
