Statements from Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin

U.S. President Donald Trump has argued that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin should negotiate an end to the war between their countries without outside help. Trump added that he no longer intends to personally intervene in the diplomatic process between Ukraine and Russia. He emphasized that the conflict should never have started in the first place and claimed it would not have erupted if he had still been in office in 2022. Trump also suggested that a bilateral agreement could be reached without direct American involvement.

Zelensky’s Response

On June 5, during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Putin addressed an open letter from Zelensky published the previous day by the Ukrainian Presidential Office. In that letter, Zelensky proposed a face-to-face meeting in a neutral country, a ceasefire for the duration of talks, and a large-scale prisoner exchange under an 'all-for-all' formula. Putin said he had reviewed Zelensky’s appeal and criticized the decision to make such matters public. He also insisted he had never refused a personal meeting with the Ukrainian leader but currently saw no point in holding one.

Reacting to Trump’s remarks, Zelensky called them a

“weak response”
and stated that Putin
“simply does not want to end the war.”
Trump, for his part, reiterated that
“they should figure it out themselves”
and highlighted the military equipment he supplied to Ukraine, saying:
“Without the equipment I gave them, Ukraine wouldn’t have lasted a day or two.”
These comments reflect growing tension in Ukraine-Russia negotiations and show that key international players hold divergent approaches to resolving the conflict.

The situation surrounding the peace process between Ukraine and Russia remains complex, given the differing stances of both countries' leaders and their international allies. While Trump and Putin display a degree of detachment from active mediation, Zelensky continues to stress the importance of dialogue for achieving peace. Monitoring these developments is crucial, as they may significantly shape the global community’s next steps in addressing the conflict.
